Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine traveled to America twice, the first time in 1842 and the second in 1867-68. Both trips were successes, in that he was lauded and praised everywhere he appeared and, in fact, had to employ secretaries and handlers to manage the crowds during his travel and public appearances. His second trip embittered him somewhat, since he saw the aftermath of the American Civil War and also began to speak out about the injustice of the lack of copyright protection afforded authors of the time. His works had for many years been reproduced in various forms and he was never able to achieve any compensation for this usage. Americans reacted badly to his American Notes, written on his return to England, as it was highly critical of American morals and mores.
