Helen Keller was born in Alabama on June 27, 1880. At birth she had both sight and hearing. However, less than two years later (at the age of 19 months) she contracted a dangerous fever after which she became deaf and blind forever.

It would have been nearly impossible to teach her anything if she had been born with only tactile senses. However, some born deaf or blind have overcome their disabilities and accomplished fantastic things.
