Maya Angelou started to write poems after a women down the street from Maya's grandmother's house asked her to read books and recite the books in a poem. When she moved back to Stamps, Arkansas with her grandmother, a woman down the street, named Mrs.Flowers, tried to get her to talk, Maya wouldn't talk. So, Mrs.Flowers gave Maya some books and asked her to come back the next day to recite the books in a poem. Maya came back the next day with her poems and told Mrs. Flowers that she didn't really understand the books but she still did the assignment anyways. From then own, Maya started writing and reciting her own poems.
