Dr. Gonzo who appears in Hunter S. Thompson's books "Where the Buffalo Roam" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is a real person named Oscar "Zeta" Acosta. Mr. Acosta was a Chicano activist, attorney, politician and novelist. He met Hunter Thompson in the summer of 1967. He disappeared in Mexico in 1972.
There is a type of sandal for little kids called gonzou (gonzo with a long o sound at the end). Also, gonzou (the same word basically, with different Chinese characters) can mean a monk/priest from a specific era in Japanese history. I am not sure what gonzo means to you, though... These are answers I found in a Japanese -> Japanese dictionary.

There is little to no evidence that Bill Hicks ever met Hunter S. Thompson. The only way the two could have met is if they were on Late Night with David Letterman on the same night. That way they would have met backstage in the dressing rooms. The only way Hicks would've met him was this way and Hicks never said he met him while talking to anyone.
