There are two sides in this mystery thriller: the protagonist side is the visitors who were asked to visit the island and the antagonist is the murderer who plays mind games with the visitors throughout their stay. The visitors are made up of random citizens from across the social spectrum who are all at some way At Fault for the death of another, although most of the crimes would not be convicted in a court of law, such as watching another person drown. Since there is no one else present on the island, the murderer is one of the visitors who is pretending to be on their side. The reader is not exposed to the murderer's point of view throughout the chapters, but there is an excerpt at the end of the book entitled "A manuscript document sent to the Scotland Yard by the master of the "Emma Jane", fishing trawler." In this passage it is learned that the murderer was a person with a love for justice.
