From his letters home and from his book American Notes, it's clear that while he liked many things about the United States, he deplored slavery and the treatment of free blacks. He also thought many of the men were uncouth and unhygienic, though he said American ladies were beautiful. He also objected to--and had to make elaborate arrangements to deal with--with pressing, often rude, crowds whenever he left his hotel rooms.

On his second journey to America, he spoke out against the fact that publishers and theater owners were profiting by reprinting or presenting pastiches of his novels without paying him. He is the first author to call for the copyrighting of the written word.
