Emily had a very reclusive life. She spent her years living upstairs at her father's house. She wrote as her way to express her feelings to the outside world. She was quite certain that she would be famous for her writing after death.When she was alive, Emily Dickinson was not that popular. Her writing was not well known. Thanks to the social circles of her parents, she was able to meet many writers, including Harriet Beecher Stowe. Emily Dickinson wrote poetry. Only a few of these poems were published in her lifetime. After her death, they were collected into book collections.

Emily started wearing all white after her father's death.

Emily Dickinson died at the age of 55 on May 15, 1886. She died of Bright's disease. She is buried in West Cemetery, Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, America.
