Christian Dior launched the 'New Look' of woman's fashion. Coming off WWII, ration minded Parisian women were ready for a change. Dior premiered a shorter hem line, fitted bodice, and a return to feminine elegance. This silhouette was quickly copied and spread all over Europe and to America. The fit and flare look Americans attribute to the 1950's is very much in the style of Dior. While he continued to innovate, his career was cut short when he died in the late 1950's. His successor was Yves Saint Laurent who designed for Dior for a few seasons before opening his own salon. The house fell out of fashion during the 60s and 70s, growing stagnant and surviving off their fragrance revenues. In the early 1980's Bernard Arnault (LVMH) purchaed the house of Dior and turned it around. Desginer Gianfranco Ferre made the brand popular again with his power suits and later John Galliano would receive rave reviews for his outstanding couture.
