Jane Stith Craig Stanard was the mother of Poe's childhood friend Robert Stanard, therefore, she could not have been his "first love" as that term is understood. Jane Stanard was born in 1793 and died in 1824. Poe's first love was his childhood sweetheart, Sarah Elmira Royster. They had been secretly engaged to be married but her father did not think Poe a suitable match for his daughter. Her father kept them apart and she married Alexander Shelton. She died in 1888 at age 77, most likely of natural causes rather than of tuberculosis as everyone seems to think every woman in Poe's life died of TB.

Stanard died of brain cancer, though she was not his "first love." She was a mother figure to him, and he loved her as such.

Sarah Elmira Royster, Poe's first love, became secretly engaged to him in 1826 as Poe began attending the University of Virginia. Sarah's father greatly disapproved of their young age, (15 and 16), but also probably disapproved of Poe's low social and financial status as a poor orphan. Thus, he separated the two and burned all of Poe's letters to Sarah, without her knowing. She believed Poe had forgotten her, so two years later (1828) she married Alexander Shelton.
