Hughes means that promises for a better future mean nothing if we cannot survive the present.
For example, people were saying in his time (and others continue to say, today) that there will be a better, safer and more equitable society for African Americans and other minorities. But if the minorities of 'today' are being underpaid, ridiculed, even physically harmed, will they or their children even survive to see that better tomorrow? In other words, today is where the future starts, it is an indispensable part of the future. Today is the day we must fulfill our promises to make it a just world for ourselves and others.
Note the last lines of the same poem, Democracy: "I live here, too./ I want freedom / Just as you." Hughes seems to be saying that African Americans are not a future race, but a present race; we are not children who will one day be born into a just world, but your neighbors who are living right next to you, right now.
An equally important poem by Hughes on the same idea is called "A Dream Deferred". My favorite play of all time, "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry, took its title from this poem.
It means that it only works when everyone participates. Democracy only has any meaning when everyone is voting. Many of the principles of democracy require a certain amount of active, informed and watchful citizens. This is why restrictions on free speech or censorship of the press are so harmful to a democracy.
U (YOU) cannot tell if tomorrows market unless you are the boss or the staff member of the shops or you can read the newspaper to see whats tomorrow's market or you watch the TV to see the things.
You need to tell us who he is, or we cannot answer the question.
Langston Hughes never married. He was openly gay and had relationships with men throughout his life, but he did not have a spouse.
Sorry, cannot find him. There was a poet of this name. A.W. Langston I believe is Anne Warren Langston an artist who originated in Greenville, Mississippi and relocated in Belvidere, IL in the 1950's. 1888 would be her approximate birth year. In addition to her paintings on canvas, she painted china. Her work is beautiful and I have a few pieces.
In a democracy, certain fundamental political rights are typically protected and cannot be abolished, such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right to peaceful assembly. These rights are essential for a functioning democracy as they allow for diverse perspectives, public discourse, and accountability of those in power.
The term "democracy" comes from a Greek word meaning "rule of the people." I have searched and searched and cannot find a specific quote that mentions constitution and government being under the people's rule.
Pure Democracy cannot cure the mischief of faction because if the faction is a majority, than they will pursue their interests at the expense of national welfare.
He would have to refuse the validity of an election, disband congress and the senate and command total authority. In the USA democracy is a key belief and simply cannot be dissolved.
Without the consent of the citizenry a democracy cannot exist.
The question is meaningless as asked: democracy and socialism cannot be contrasted that way. Democracy is a political term describing how a government is formed, and socialism is an economic term describing how people are treated.
Of course, this will vary by person, but my view is that the central idea of American democracy is the view that although the will of the majority must be pursued, it cannot violate the needs and rights of the minority.
