There has been ongoing debate about this for many years. What we do know is that the famous author Mark Twain approached President Grant about writing his memoirs. We also know that Twain did some (what he claimed to be minor) editing of the manuscript before the final version was published. However, Twain always denied that he wrote the memoirs, and even denied that he helped with anything other than light editing. And Grant's supporters always insisted that it was he alone who did all the writing. This may be one of these stories where we will never fully know the truth, but the memoir was released in 1885 and it sold well. To this day, Grant's Memoirs are still appreciated by historians and students.
