Poe's first love was Sarah Elmira Royster to whom Poe was secretly engaged years before he married Virginia Clemm. Sarah's father would not approve of the marriage and began to intercept letters from Poe to her, making her think Poe had forgotten her. She then married Alexander B. Shelton, who died in 1844. After Poe's wife died in 1847, he went back to Sarah and asked her to marry him. At first she declined, but then in August 1849 she accepted. Unfortunately, Poe died on October 7, 1849, before the wedding could take place.
