In his books "Adam's Diary" and "Eve's Diary" Mark Twain wanted to demonstrate what life must have been like for two people zapped into existence by God without any instructions to follow. Adam is the good natured fool (in the Shakespearean sense) who comments on life and things that he cannot understand - like what the fish must feel after he scoops them from the water and they flop around looking unhappy, but since death has not been introduced, they cannot die.

Like the characters in most modern sitcoms Adam (as the bumbling father) is counterbalanced by Eve who is the intuitively wise mother.
