Hemingway lost much of his interest in politics after the Spanish Civil War, but up through that time, he could most accurately be called a man of the political Left.

Hemingway was very sympathetic to the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War, which would thus align him with a coalition of parties that ranged from moderate socialists to left-wing anarchists. He was friends with many well-known American leftist writers and activists. His writing, particularly For Whom the Bell Tolls, presents a clear anti-fascist ideology with explicit support for New Deal redistributive policies in favor of breaking up concentrated wealth and large estates, as well as an open disgust with right-wing American politics--people whom the protagonist Robert Jordan refers to as those "who do not know they are fascists but will find it out when the time comes.'"

Recently unearthed KGB memos revealed that Hemingway (referred to as "Argo" in KGB documents) had had contact with Soviet agents in London and Havana during World War II. They attempted to recruit him on "ideological grounds," though they later stated that that he had written a piece critical of the Soviet Union and was an admirer of Trotskyists (anti-Stalinist communists).
