"culture" is not easy to define, but there are dictionaries and encyclopedias out there. Get reading. Wikipedia is usually very good. If you find a word there that you don't know, enter "define: unknown_word" in Google (without the quotes, but with the colon, unknown_word being the word you don't know) and you'll get an array of dictionary definitions back.
Not all cultures have authors, but all authors exist in the midst of culture. One way of examining culture is to read authors and consider the cultural assumptions implicit in their work.
