A homeless boy named Manny Bustos has always dreamed of going to America, and leaving his life in Juarez. He then meets the Vietnam veteran Robert Locke. Robert is a sergeant and has seen many of his friends die in war. He drink because he thinks if he doesn't drink then his "friends" he calls them, would come back and haunt him. He drinks until he's brain dead in the club Congo tiki. Manny first meets Robert outside of the club and then he gets dragged by Robert to the river because he was trying to steal his wallet. Robert then starts to buy Manny lots of things and ends up dying for him in the end and gives him his wallet so that Manny can cross the border to America.
