"Pioneers, Oh Pioneers" is a short story by Dominican writer Jean Rhys published in 1976 in a collection of short stories called "Sleep It Off, Lady".Mr. Ramage, a Englishman who travels to Dominica, is the main character of the short story. In the story he buys an estate, marries a colored woman and attempts to go assimilate into the Dominican culture. The community considers his behavior odd and criticizes him. In the end he commits suicide.There is also a famous poem "Pioneers, Oh Pioneers!" written by Walt Whitman in 1900.
