Britain did not have an official language, as in sanctioned in a written constitution, 500 years ago (and it still doesn't).At that time the type of English spoken was Early Modern English which would be partially unintelligible to a speaker of Contemporary English although its written form is enjoyed by millions in the works of William Shakespeare.
