Poe was found in 'great distress' on the street on 3 October 1849, and he died at Washington College Hospital in Baltimore, MD, on 7 October 1849. There is some disagreement about the cause of death; some attribute it to cooping, delirium tremens, others to Heart disease, epilepsy, syphilis, meningeal inflammation, consumption (tuberculosis), cholera, even rabies. The true cause will probably never be known.
