It seems that Sir Conan Doyle wasn't that fond of Sherlock Holmes, nor was he pleased with the fact that his popularity greatly superseded that of his other writings. There was a public outcry and Conan Doyle had to bring Holmes back from the dead by pretending Holmes hadn't fallen to his death after all but had pretended to die in order to escape his enemies. Conan Doyle then wrote five more books (2 novels and 32 short stories) and then finished off Holmes with "His Last Bow", and then died 3 years later.....
Yeah he did and two wives. He was kinda cheating on his first wife, but still loved them both at the same time. By Louise Hawkins ("Touie") his first wife, he had Arthur Alleyne Kingsley [known as Kingsley] and Mary. By Jean Leckie, his second wife, he had Adrian, Denis, and Lena Jean [known in the family as Billie. She became Dame Jean Conan Doyle for her services as Commandant of the Women's Army Air Force in World War Two.] None of his children had children. Touie had tuberculosis and for some reason (medical advice?) Doyle and she no longer shared a bed. We don't know if he had sex with Jean before Touie's death (Louise lived 12 years or so after the diagnosis), but they were 'an item' for years.
He obtained a degree of Doctor of Medicine with the special study of tabes dorsalis from the University of Edinburgh in 1881. He was a ship's surgeon, studied ophthalmology, and opened a couple of different private practices, which yielded few, if any, patients. He had been writing part-time for many years up to that point with limited success, so he finally decided to become a full-time writer in or about 1891.
