Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was 55 years old when World War 1 started, so no. He did, however, write about the war.
No, in the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The movies where Basil Rathbone plays Holmes, Holmes does not fight, but assists Scotland Yard and Washington D.C. in their war efforts against the Nazis. The case 'His Last Bow' takes place during World War 1. Sherlock Holmes would have been about 85 when World War 2 started.
Arthur Conan Doyle tried to kill off Sherlock Holmes when he was writing the original stories in Strand magazine, but public pressure forced him to revive Holmes for more stories. Wanting to devote more time to his historical novels, Conan Doyle killed off Holmes in "The Final Problem" which was printed in 1893. He resisted Holmes`resurrection for 8 years until he wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901. However, Hound was set a a time before Holmes``death`at Reichenbach Falls. His survival is revealed in "The Adventure of the Empty House".

King Arthur died in a fight with his nephew Mordred. King Arthur fatally wounded Mordred but he was still in tact, so he willingly stabbed King Arthur back before he died.
It's written in one of Arthur Conan Doyle's bibliographies. According to that text, it says that Doyle got bored and sick of Holmes (though I can't think how anybody could be sick of Holmes) and killed him off in the Reichenbach Falls during his fight with Moriarty.
In 1947, Doyle challenged Sugar Ray Robinson for the World Welterweight Title. Robinson had the advantage in every round except the sixth, when he was staggered twice and hurt. A single left hook from Robinson ended the fight. "That punch knocked Jimmy rigid..With heels resting against the canvas as if hinged, Doyle's body went down. It struck the floor with a thud, like a rigid mass falling. His head crashed against the padded canvas, and as the referee started the count. Doyle raised his head and rested on his elbows... The referee counted to ten. Doyle was out. Doyle was taken to St. Vincent's Charity Hospital immediatedly after the bout, and failed to regain consciousness and died a few hours later.
In the books and most movies, Prof. Moriarty (his arch nemesis) and Holmes fall off the Reichenbach Falls. Sherlock survives, but Moriarty dies. The only reason Conan Doyle killed him off was because he grew tired of the character and the series, and it was distracting him from other projects. He brought back Sherlock Holmes because fans of Holmes got angry and forced Conan Doyle to bring him back. In the BBC modern-day adaptation of Sherlock, Moriarty tells Sherlock that he will kill Sherlock's friends is Sherlock does not kill himself. This exchange occurs on top of St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Moriarty shoots himself in the head, and then Sherlock jumps to his apparent death. At the very end of the episode, it is shown that Sherlock is still alive.
