As a young child, before she met Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller would eat with her hands, never used a fork or spoon. She was also allowed to go from one person's plate to another and grab food off of the plates of her family members. When Anne Sullivan arrived, she taught Helen Keller how to eat with utensils properly and not with her hands, and not to take food from anyone else's plate. She taught her a system often used by blind people, in which certain kinds of food are arranged on the plate in specific places, in which you think of the plate as a clock, and for instance, the vegetables might be at 6:00 and the main course at noon, etc. That method helped her locate what she was trying to eat.
