It was very hard. Work houses were in full flow whre the poor were mistreaed and punished for being poor. Starvation was accute across Britain and many welsthy business people were ignornant of the poverty around them. This was also a time when Dickens was fighting the issues of child labour
It was dark without electricity and children had to work hard from 7 years old.

Chaucer name was french and Latin and he lived a life with his dad as a wine merchant and i am not so sure about his mother but i think that his mother must of died somehow i am not sure and i am not sure Chaucer and Dickens did not live at the same time. Chaucer was born c. 1343 and died in 1400. Charles Dickens was not born until 1812 and he died in 1870.
