St teresa of avila
St. Teresa of Avila was a Carmelite who reformed the Carmelite order and founded the Discalced Carmelites. She became a saint by following the will of God, she was a great mystic, and left us numerous books on how to pray and how to live the Christian life which she wrote at the command of her spiritual directors. She was humble, and obedient to the Will of God in all things, seeing the Will of God in the commands of her superiors and her directors. This complete obedient and humility led to great perfection in this life.

In earlier years miracles were not a requirement for canonization. That has come about in recent centuries. Teresa of Avila was not known as a great miracle performer. If Our Lord did work miracles through Teresa there is apparently no written record of them. She is better known as a mystic, reformer and writer. For more information, check the link below.
St. Teresa of Avila, whose name in religion was Mother Teresa of Jesus originally was vowed in the Carmelite Order in Spain. She received permission from her Bishop, and eventually from Rome to found a Carmelite Order known as the Discalced Carmelites (unshod - they were sandals instead of shoes) otherwise known as the Observance of the Primitive Rule of the Carmelites. She wrote several books, mostly on Prayer and the Spiritual Life at the command of her spiritual director, they have been best sellers now for almost five hundred years: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Teresa+of+Avila

According to my research, Saint Theresa of Avila is the patron Saint of Spain. Similarly, Saint Theresa of Lisieux is the patron saint of Russia, South Africa, and France. It is confusing as there are two. God bless.

Roman Catholic AnswerSt. Teresa of Jesus (of Avila) was one of the greatest saints that arose after the protestant revolt. She reformed the Carmelite Order and founded the Discalced Carmelites. Her wonderful spirituality and prayer life, and magnificent writings which she left, written at the command of her superiors and confessors, have been and still are an inspirations to many throughout the Church. Her books are even published and read by protestants!
