Anne Frank and her family went into hiding in 1942 during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. They stayed hidden in the secret annex of an office building in Amsterdam for over two years before being discovered and arrested in 1944.
She did not "build" it - it had existed in the upper rear portion of her fathers place of business for many years. Otto Frank furnished it over a period of time in early 1942, and the Franks moved to it in July of that year.

On July 8, 1942, Anne Frank and her family went into hiding to escape Nazi persecution. This decision to go into hiding turned Anne's whole world upside down as they had to leave their home and live in secrecy to avoid being discovered. This marked the beginning of their two-year hiding period in the secret annex.
She was hiding with her older sister Margot, her father and mother, another family called the Van Peels ( or in her diary the Van Daans) with their son Peter, and a dentist who joined them about a year after they all went on hiding.
