He was born and grew up in the town of Sighet, Translyvania. In 1940 that part of Romania was transferred to Hungary. He lived in the Jewish district (ghetto). In 1944 the whole community, including Elie, were transported to Auschwitz. After the war, he was placed in a French orphanage.
