He wrote in, or was inspired by, several countries. He was born and raised in Scotland, where he used his writing to help him overcome a childhood where he was frequently ill and unable to go out and play with the other kids. Later, he traveled for health reasons (to get to better climates) and what he saw when he visited France influenced his work; he also visited the United States (California) and that too influenced his writing. He and his wife also visited the Hawaiian islands (which were not part of the United States at that time) and they then went to Samoa, which is where he died in 1894. All of his travels affected and influenced what he wrote during his life.
Robert Louis Stevenson was buried on Mount Vaea in Samoa, overlooking the city of Apia. He chose this location as his final resting place because he had a great affection for the Samoan people and culture.
