The best known English writer who used drugs is probably Thomas de Quincey (1785-1859), though he was not a poet. In 1822 his book 'Confessions of an English Opium-Eater' appeared. Samuel T Coleridge (1772-1834) is an example of a poet who used drugs. It is said that Aldous Huxley (again not a poet, but a novellist) took drugs. Apparently Keats and Shelley also took drugs.
