Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as the Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day in the year 800 AD. Leo III named him "Charles Augustus" during the coronation ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
It was Charlemagne, the king of the Franks. His coronation by the pope was the beginning of the Carolingian Empire (named after Charlemagne) which lasted from 800 to 888. To be precise, the pope was Leo III.
A king that was named charlemagne
Charlemagne's grandfather was named Charles "the hammer" Martel. After winning the battle of Tours in the name of God, Martel was crowned emperor of the Frankish empire. He then had a son named Pepin the Short who succeeded him. And Pepin the Short had two sons, Carloman and Charles. After Carloman's death that we know nothing about other than that he died, Charles (Charlemagne) took over as king.

Charlemagne
Charlemagne was given the title of Holy Roman Emperor.
Charlemagne is regarded as a member, but not the founder, of the Carolingian Dynasty. The dynasty was named for his grandfather, Charles Martel. It is said to have been started by Charlemagne's father, Pipin the Short, when he was crowned in 751. After the death of Louis the Pious, the dynasty went into decline, gradually losing power, largely because of conflicts among its members. The last monarch of the Carolingian dynasty was King Louis V the Indolent, who died in 987.
