Charlemagne is regarded as a member, but not the founder, of the Carolingian Dynasty. The dynasty was named for his grandfather, Charles Martel. It is said to have been started by Charlemagne's father, Pipin the Short, when he was crowned in 751. After the death of Louis the Pious, the dynasty went into decline, gradually losing power, largely because of conflicts among its members. The last monarch of the Carolingian dynasty was King Louis V the Indolent, who died in 987.

Charlemagne's father, Pepin the Short, became king by seizing power from the Merovingian dynasty, which had ruled the Franks for centuries but had become weak and ineffective. In 751, Pepin was anointed king by Pope Zachary, legitimizing his rule and marking the beginning of the Carolingian dynasty. This alliance with the Church strengthened his position and set a precedent for the divine right of kings in the Frankish kingdom.
