Aristophanes is not only the most famous of the ancient Greek comedians, he is the only one whose works survive. Of his 40 or so plays, 12 are still in existence. Aristophanes' humor relies on social satire mixed with gross-out jokes. He's actually still pretty funny, and pretty relevant. For example, his play "The Birds" revolves around two men who are sick of being sued constantly in Athens, a theme which wouldn't sound out of place in an American stand-up routine. Aristophanes even goes so far as to make fun of many of the great Athenians we all learn about in school; he even lampoons Socrates.
