Emily Dickinson read this article and admired it, its contents having much to do with advice for young writers, and sent him a letter asking for comment on four of her own poems, which she included in her letter. He sent back some edits and several questions regarding the breadth of her reading. The two would remain active correspondents until her death. I have not had occasion to closely examine his letters, although hers are widely available and quite beautiful. She thinks very highly of him, and later writes that through his engagement with her art, he saved her life.
It appears as though Higginson initially thought the poems strange, "dark," and "spazmodic," words he uses to describe them. Whatever his insight into her poetry, he seems to have underestimated it until after her death. It is not unfair to call Higginson her editor. ==
