A book entitled White Wing was written by Gordon Kendall. I'm not sure you can go so far as to call it a famous book.
That said it is an intriguing Science Fiction story where Earth itself is a long dead planet and the descendants of those few who escaped are treated with suspicion by their supposed allies in a war with a race called the Sejeidi.
On one level the book is a fairly simple action/adventure space battle story. On another it deals with drugs, prejudice, post traumatic stress and other both deep and dark issues in a quite sensitive and sympathetic way. The character Dustin in particular is interesting as is Frederico and Gordon. Strong female characters also abound, in particular Miriam and Susan and although the book is quite short in length it's well written and doesn't lack in sense of location, characters or emotions that they go through. Unlike many novels both inside and outside the science fiction genre there are no cardboard cut out uber-heroes or super-villains here. It's well worth a read whether you like sci-fi or not and I have had my copy for more than twenty years.

The butterfly you are describing sounds like a Monarch butterfly. Monarch butterflies are known for their distinctive black wings with white spots and an orange triangle at the center of each wing. They are famous for their long-distance migration and can be found in North and South America.
