As far as "making a living" (supporting oneself) teaching was about all there was for young women back then, but in Laura's case, it was a matter of the family needing the extra income.

Teaching was the only way for Laura to earn any more than piecework money (sewing). Laura did not want to teach, but she did it dutifully, and actually came to enjoy it by her last term of teaching.
