The van Pels son Peter was docile and unemotional - for the most part, when they corrected him, he took it meekly. Anne was fiery and obstinate. The Franks, for the most part, just accepted it as part of Anne's personality, whereas the van Pels - especially Mrs. van Pels - thought Anne was undisciplined and arrogant, and made comments to the extent of how Anne would be better behaved if she'd been raised better. This embittered Mrs. Frank toward Mrs. van Pels to an extent.
