Just as Rome was the administrative capital and Milan the commercial capital, Florence was the cultural capital of Italy. The Florentines were always susceptible to new ideas and the ruling Medici family were almost all art promoters. But they ruled with an iron will. Sir Lorenzo purposefully made citizens excessively indulge in shows and festivals so that when they fully forgot their political power he shall become the dictator. The famous Dominican friar Savo Narola made this clear to the people through his preachings for which he was burnt at the stake. So it is clear that a streak of clear political thought coexisted with the confused renaissance convictions of the Sixteenth century Florence and Italy. Niccolo Machiavelli's book The Prince expounded the theory of how an able administrator could be created. It was his Utopia and his model, which gave rise to new thoughts on the line of political administration which are relevant even today.
