In 1899, Charles Dickens was hired as a political journalist and his first contributions became Sketches by Boz, which were eventually combined and published as The Pickwick Papers. From that point on, he wrote steadily and was, in fact, in the middle of a novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, when he died in 1876.

In 1836, he became the editor of of Bentley's Miscellany.
