Hsi parents pulled him out of school so he could contribute to the household income by working at Warren's Blacking Company, where he applied labels to bottles. He lived in nearby lodgings during the eight months of his employment and was desperately homesick, hungry, and heartsick. He loved school (or at least later said so) and always regretted his lack of formal education. The whole experience, though only eight months, changed him fundamentally. Child labor comes into many of his plots, as do orphans (which he felt like during that period). But he was deeply ashamed of it. He never even told his wife about Warren's. His best friend and biographer and literary executor, John Forster, only discovered it after CD's death.
