Miep Gies was Otto's secretary, and assumed the primary job of being courier and protector for those in hiding. She was helped by every one of the others who worked for Mr. Frank, however, as she insisted on always pointing out. They all did assume equal risk, although those in the annex always looked to Miep as their main go-between.
Miep and others helped the Franks during their time in hiding because they believed it was the right thing to do and felt a sense of responsibility to help those in need. They also formed close relationships with the Franks and wanted to support them during a difficult and dangerous time. Additionally, they were motivated by a sense of humanity and compassion, as well as a desire to resist the injustices of the Nazi regime.
