To prevent this, with the new battery disconnected, turn the key in the ignition to ON. Make sure the door is closed, and then connect the battery. This prevents the alarm from going off. What I did was to install a battery disconnect switch that I use when the van is sitting for more than a week. Now after it has been sitting for awhile, I go out, put in the key, flip the battery switch, hop back in and the car starts.
