The PH8a and the PH16 have the same base. This means you can screw one onto where the other normally goes and it will function perfectly. It's advantageous to have a larger oil filter due to the larger surface area of the filter media and the larger oil capacity. It's important to have adequate space for the body of the filter to make sure it doesn't contact other items in the engine compartment. Your engine is not mounted rigidly! Therefore the larger PH8a may not be able to suit your needs.

Also, Phram filters are just about the worst filter you can buy. As far as quality goes, Mobil1 (M1-301) and K&N (Hp-3001) are the best due to their high filtering surface area and heavy duty construction. When considering simple filtration surface area and filter fineness, the Pure One (3001) is a great filter.

I have a Jeep wrangler and have used the larger oil filter (M1-301) for pretty much the entire life of my vehicle and have had no issues. Mobil 1 oil and 10,000 mile (or bi annual) oil change intervals for the last 120,000 miles and she still runs like the day i brought her home from the dealer!
