DEXRON III can be used as a temporary replacement if you're just topping off the transmission, but should not be used as regular fill, and definitely not for a complete drain and refill. The DEXRON III is slightly thicker than the ATF-Z1, and also does not have the special additives that the OE Honda fluid does. It will cause harsh shifting, and if used for an extended period of time will gum up the shift solenoid. The shift solenoid is expensive, and the transmission would need to be flushed with the correct fluid before it will shift right.

There are now several ATF-Z1 compatible fluids available in auto parts stores, such as Castrol Import, and recently Mobil 1 ATF. These are thinner than DEXRON III, which the transmission perfers, and have the necessary additives. The real deal from the dealer is still the prefered fluid.

Drain and refill is usually done between 15-30K miles.

Is atf-z1 the same as dexronIII?

ATF Z-1 is not the same as Dexron III. Z-1 is a Honda specific fluid that is manufactured only for Honda transmissions. There are similarities in makeup of the two products, but the Dexron III will not meet the same performance criteria as the Z-1. Honda manufactures their own transmissions and for this reason, has developed their own ATF. For more information, contact your local Honda dealer.
