A cracked boot itself won't cause a CV joint to make noise. However, a cracked boot WILL cause the grease to be slung out and allow dirt to enter the CV joint. And a contaminated CV joint that is starved for lubricant WILL eventually start to make noise.
Check the "boot" for cracks and see if there is any loss of grease. The boot is the rubber housing around the CV Joint. If the boot is damaged, grease has escaped and the CV Joint is making noise, the CV joint must be replaced.
it shouldn't be. replace the joint or the axle.
It sounds like you have a bad CV joint. Often times the rubber boot covering the joint will go bad after a while and allow dirt and moisture in the joint, causing noise, most noticeable on turning.
Check the CV Joints both inner and outer. Probally a boot has failed and the joint has loss all grease.
It might be a CV joint, when the CV boot is ripped and the grease is partly gone , then it makes noise.
Possibly the CV joint. If the joint's "boot" has split, lubricant will have leaked out and will cause the components inside the joint to grind together. Take the car to your local dealer for a better insight.
At first you won't notice it. But after a while, dirt/water will get into the CV joint, and destroy the parts inside. You really need to have a new boot put on as soon as you can.
Check to see if your cv boot is torn, or if joint is bad.
Did you replace the CV joint itself? If the boot is torn then that is your problem.
You'll get clacking whenever you turn...especially at full turn, slow speed. You'll get a light knock as the vehicle coasts wheich will get worse until the joint fails altogether. If there's grease, you should be able to see if the boot OS cracked. Pry the ridges apart on the black ridged boot covering the joint and you'll see if it needs changing or not. If there's cracks, then dirt and water has gotten in and destroyed the joint.
The boot is the rubber cover The boot is the accorion-folded rubber shroud that fits over the ball joint,
The usual symptoms are a knocking or loud clicking noise from the front of the car when cornering. The noise is not normally noticeable when driving straight. Check the CV boot (the rubber cover round the drive shaft nearest to the front wheel) this will very often be the cause of the failure if it is split.
