The function of the device is to reduce emissions by burning any unburned hydrocarbons (gas). When it goes bad, it will tend to pass less air through and effectively choke the engine, particularly if the insides break free. This can cause stalling or just significantly reduced performance. Likewise, having the wrong one installed can cause the wrong back pressure on the engine. While this wont damage your engine outright, it can lead to improper burning and possible carbon build up inside the engine and/or on the valves.
The life of your catalytic converter depends on the condition of the engine and the fuel you're using. If the fuel has the wrong additives, the catalytic converter can become plugged up. If the engine burns oil the oil vapor will build up on the catalytic converter and it can become plugged. Otherwise, if the catalytic converter isn't plugged, don't replace it.
Replace catalytic converter
The converter is clogged or the engine is running way to rich or has a misfire.
It the caralytic converter is clogged you may do serious damage to your engine. At the very least you will get very poor mileage. I would repair this before taking a trip of tha distance. Common sense should apply.
A couple of things could be wrong. number one you could have a check engine light on saying low deficiency out of parameter's. this means that the catalytic converter does not meet the right heat range. If it is to high this could mean that your catalytic converter is plugged. you Will have no power, very sluggish. If it is low you could have no back pressure, the inside of the catalytic converter is empty, this is to cold. it will cause the check engine light to illuminate. This an open loop condition. your computer goes to base settings and you will get very bad fuel economy. To high and to low will cause the check engine light to come on. you will need to replace the catalytic converter.
Something is wrong with the catalytic converter.
Generally, unburned fuel getting into the converter is what damages them. How is it running?, what size engine? What did the dealer say is "wrong" with the converters they are replacing? -->You can easily damage your catalytic converter by making a lot of very short trips and not allowing you car to properly reach operating temperature.
catalytic converter?
It could be anything from buildup in your engine valves to bad timing to a plugged fuel filter to a plugged catalytic converter, you would have to be more specific?
The computer has detected a problem with the emissions controls. Have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Get this fixed, as it can cause other parts to fail, as in, the catalytic converter, O2 sensor.
Yes!!!, The catalytic converter (CC) should not have anything wrong with it if the engine was tuned correctly. If the engine was running rich, because the computer was compensating for a sensor that is giving incorrect readings then the CC would clog with the carbon produced by running too rich. This is the most common cause of CC failure.
none, it contains platinum, which erodes less and is more valuable. your not planning on stealing one? because you get easily caught they guy you sell it too will be paid to alert the police and its just wrong, the converters are easily recognizable as a specific person, you will be caught! DON'T STEAL!
