I do not think so and I think the primary use of a fuel tank cap is to prevent dirt from getting into the gas. Plug it with a rag (with the rag partially hanging out) until you can get a new one ( $7 @ Walmart )

AnswerThat is not a good answer.. never use a rag as it can ignite like a Molotov Cocktail... just drive a few minutes and buy a new one at like Autozone. You need a vented cap, but you need a cap. Otherwise you lose vacuum pressure and that is why on new cars it will trigger a service light to come on.

Yes!!!, it is illegal to not have a cap on the fuel tank.

The second answer is correct, but don't confuse a "vented cap" with a locking gas cap. The gas cap must seal and be air tight. Normal gas caps do not actually vent anything, which is why you get the pressure release when you unscrew your gas cap. (Also:Pressure can mean "PSI" or "vacuum")
