The check engine light ALWAYS means that the computer has detected a "fault". Rather than have a special light for every conceivable problem that might EVER come up with your engine, the check engine light is supposed to warn you to read the codes that the computer has detected. Even if the light goes off there should be a "stored code", meaning that there should still be something in the computer. If not, have the codes checked when the engine is cold, see what you can find.
