how old is the astra? but more importantly what engine and gearbox does it have? early engines with certain manual gearboxes you can change the clutch without removing the gearbox and subsequently saving about 4hours labour time. otherwise it is a gearbox outjob.
The clutch centre plate with spring hub help in holding the spring leaf spring in place in a vehicle.
If it's a hydraulic clutch, try bleeding the slave cylinder. Manual linkage, try adjusting the clutch. If no help, something's wrong with the pressure plate and you need a new clutch.
Damage to the clutch plate can be caused by several factors, including excessive heat from riding the clutch or frequent slipping, which can lead to glazing and reduced friction. Contaminants like oil or grease can also interfere with the clutch's operation, causing premature wear. Additionally, improper installation or misalignment, along with normal wear and tear over time, can contribute to clutch plate damage. Regular maintenance and attentive driving habits can help mitigate these issues.
I recently purchased a new clutch kit for a 1998 Prizm (which should be the same) from Oreilly Auto Parts for $99.00. This kit included the cluch plate, pressure plate and bearing. Hope that helps.

Dowels on a clutch plate play a crucial role in ensuring proper alignment and positioning of the clutch components during assembly. They help maintain consistent spacing between the clutch disc and the flywheel, which is essential for smooth engagement and disengagement of the clutch. This alignment minimizes wear and tear, reduces the risk of vibration, and enhances overall performance and durability of the clutch system. Additionally, dowels contribute to the ease of installation and prevent misalignment during repairs or replacements.
To increase torque through the driven plate, you can adjust the friction material or increase the number of friction surfaces on the plate. Additionally, increasing the pressure on the driven plate by adjusting the clutch mechanism can also help increase torque.
The clutch has overheated and burnt the pressure plate. The clutch and pressure plate will both probable need to be replaced. If this model has the Mazda transmission then the slave cylinder is probably located inside of the bell housing and should be replaced at the same time.
i have a 1973 dt 350 and i got some problums with it if you can help me out send me a email danny810@hotmail.com
I had a somewhat similar problem on a '90 Geo Metro when I changed out the clutch & associated parts. It turned out after much frustration that the rebuilt pressure plate design was no good. It used many smaller clutch release fingers that weren't stiff enough to lift the pressure plate off the clutch disc when the clutch pedal was depressed. They deflected way too much. I had to pull it all back apart!!&*^$%$%$**!, then reinstall another mfg.'s pressure plate with fewer (8, if I remember) much stiffer release fingers, which worked fine. It sounds to me as though you may have a similar problem in which the clutch isn't fully releasing, making 1st, 2nd & reverse shifts impossible.
It sounds as though you have a burned out clutch plate. The only way to fix it is to replace it. this involves dropping the gearbox in order to get out the old plate and replace it with a new one.
A weak slave cylinder can make the clutch soft or spongy, along with a wore clutch plate. If vehicle will not start could be starter, or your neutral switch is faulty.
