It is done while the engine is running in order to exchange old fluid from the torque converter. The filter and gasket are not changed in this procedure. Cost - about $90 2) You can drop the pan and let the fluid drain. This method allows changing the filter but there is a small amount of used fluid left in the torque converter. Cost - around $20
