If it's the switch on the column, you just need to pull it out. If you don't have cruise control, this is an easy task. If you do have cruise, then there will be a small flat wiring harness you will need to fish out all the way down the steering column.

The 1986 Jeep Comanche EGR valve is located on the outside of the air cleaner housing. The valve can be found on the back of the housing.
I had a 1986 cj that had the same problem. Couldn't find the problem until the dimmer switch on the floorboard went out. Replaced the switch and the gauge lights started to work.
