how to replace/install front brake rotors on an Acura Vigor:
*** it's been a while and this is how to do it to the best of my memory. I assume no responsibility for any incorrect information or accidents that may occur as a result of reading this. This information is for educational purposes only.
ALWAYS WORK SAFE IN EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!!
1) remove centre wheel cap and loosen wheel nuts
2) loosen the axle nut
3) loosen the 4 recessed bolts that hold the hub to the rotor (don't strip the heads!!! maybe use a bit of Penetrant and heat first before loosening)
4) jack up car and place jack stands underneath car
5) remove the wheel, then remove the axle nut
6) unbolt the ABS sensor and place out of the way
7) unbolt brake caliper and hang from the strut spring with a piece of wire. Also remove the bracket from the knuckle
NOTE: This is a good time to inspect and clean up the caliper and bracket, you don't want to ruin your new pads and rotors because of a sticky pin or piston. If you see any abnormalties on your old pads like uneven wear, you may have a caliper problem and may have to replace them. Otherwise, I recommend taking the caliper boots, clips and pins out and degreasing everything and regreasing with caliper grease. Sand all the clips and seating areas that the clips sit in with fine sandpaper until surfaces are clean. Make sure the boots, pins and clips are useable and be sure the pins move freely. Replace any worn parts.
8) separate tie rod end ball joint from knuckle
9) tap axle spindle inward with a rubber hammer
10) swing (pivot) knuckle so the axle comes out (keep axle supported)
11) remove the 4 bolts from the back of the steering knuckle using a 12 point socket
12) use 4 long bolts (5-6 inches long )with the same thread as the 4 bolts you just removed (I believe they are M10 x 1.5 threads).
NOTE: The 4 long bolts must be threaded all the way or most of the way up the bolt. I could not find these so I went to a specialty fastener store (Brafasco) and bought a 3 foot piece of threaded rod which I cut into 6 inch pieces with an angle grinder. I bought 8 nuts as well and threaded 2 nuts on each piece of rod and tightened them against each other to lock them in place so I could use a socket on the top nut without it moving.
13) rotate the rotor slightly so the threaded rod will push against a flat spot on the rotor when you tighten it. Do this for all 4 threaded rods and then take turns tightening each threaded rod a little at a time until the hub/rotor separates and falls off (catch it!). now unbolt the hub from the rotor
14) replace the 4 original bolts back into the knuckle
15) bolt the hub to the new rotor
16) reinsert the axle spindle through the hub
17) tighten the axle nut to push the hub/rotor into position.
18) reassemble everything and torque everything to proper spec
19) do a Google on "brake bedding" and learn the proper way to break-in your new rotors and pads - really, check it out!!!
20) DON'T USE CHEAP OR BUDGET ROTORS/PADS. You saved yourself a load of money
so use good parts
I hope I have not forgotten anything???? Good Luck, it's really not that difficult unless you have to replace the bearing as well.
How do I remove the front rotors so I can replace the CV joints? .... After removing the brake pads and caliper assembly, of course.
The front bearings on an Acura Vigor are pressed on bearings, unless you have access to a press or know of a shop that can do this for you I wouldn't attempt this job.
